Additional support around the ankle, particularly the sides may be needed if you have weakness in your ankle that is usually worse during sideways motion, such as “rolling” your ankle. Additionally, ligament injuries, such as injuries to the Medial Ankle Ligament or Lateral Ankle Ligament will usually require further stabilization.
You are most likely to require additional medial or lateral support if you are at the start of your rehabilitation journey (before injured structures are strong enough for normal movement), or in late-stage degeneration from conditions, such as arthritis.
